FIELD DATA COLLECTION through PDA GPS
Dear Sirs,
I would like to introduce yourself , basically freelancer (s/w development) working in the mobile based GIS, GPS & MIS data collections application development field.
The GPS for collecting geo-locations of various point using generic GPS like Garmin / Magellen etc. I advice you to use PDA GPS in place of normal GPS. Here are some points from user friendlyness & TOC point of view on which you may think over before choosing GPS vs PDA GPS.
A. If you are using normal GPS for collecting geo-locations, there is no automated system to store it on the central repository. You have to download these points on to PC and then prepare txt, csv or xls file. It increases the data collection post work. While in case of using PDA GPS we can deploy our own s/w on to it as per our need which can capable to upload the data on the fly to the server directly. There is no need to bring the GPS in to office / home for downloading the collected data. It reduces the post work drastically when the data collections is being done at multiple places specially when the data collection is being done on wide geo-graphic locations , different cities. Also, anybody can collect & upload the data using these PDA GPS. No computer trained person is required to download and prepare the data which reduces the manual errors.
B. There is no option to collect other attributic information of our point of interest except geo-location and the name of location when we are using GPS. For example if we are collecting the departmental stores information and we are collecting other information of store like what is telephone no, size, per day income etc, we have to collect these extra information on paper which has to be keyed in using computer later on which increases the post work and manual error. But when we are using PDA GPS we can develop data collection application accordingly and these information can be captured during field visit which reduces our data entry task.
